We will be attending the Pink Partners of the Community Cancer Center’s Mamm and Glam event on Thursday, May 11th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This free event is an area-wide initiative to educate women about breast health and to raise the mammography rate in our community. There will be pampering services ranging from hand massages and manicures, to make-overs and up-do’s, food provided by Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano, and of course shopping! You can shop our lovely apparel, as well as jewelry, handbags, accessories, and skin care from other vendors.
There will also be 2 speakers at the event. Dr. Woodhouse, from the Community Cancer Center, will be speaking at 6 pm on the topic of Making Decisions from a Position of Strength Not Fear. Lifestyle coach Mattie Scott will speak at 6:45 with a talk on positivity titled “Less stress, More glam!”. In addition, there will be door prizes drawn at 7:15 that have been donated from some of the vendors in attendance. While pampering, shopping, and prizes are nice, the highlight of the evening is having each of BloNo’s mammography facilities in attendance with the ability to schedule a mammogram for those ladies who haven’t had one in the last year.
We were able to speak with Lisa Lowry, a Breast Health Navigator at the Community Cancer Center. On the topic of reaching more women in the BloNo area, she stated, “We decided who better to join our movement than local beauty shops. We had a focus group with several salons to discuss how we could all work together to reach the women of our communities, especially minorities. There is a large amount of minority women that do not get mammograms whether it is due to a lack of insurance, access to transportation, or lack of knowledge. Mamm & Glam was actually the idea of one of our salon partners, Rosie Smith, who owns Rosie’s Hair Gallery. The whole focus group thought her idea was excellent and we ran with it.”
Included in the Pink Partners, aside from the Community Cancer Center, is Advocate Bromenn, the Gale Keeran Center for Women, and OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. Throughout the year, this group of healthcare providers participates in different events to help spread the word on the importance of women receiving their annual mammogram. They are dedicated to spreading knowledge and increasing the use of this preventive health measure. We hope that you join us this Thursday in our fight against breast cancer!
