Sugar Creek Arts Festival

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

The Sugar Creek Arts Festival is here! This Saturday, June 8th from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, June 9th from 11 am to 4 pm 128 extremely talented artists will be showcasing their original creations on the streets of Uptown Normal. Jan Brandt from Jan Brandt Gallery and Melinda Barry from Pomona66 will be setting up shop at OhmFit. They will have completed works for you to shop and will also be accepting custom orders all weekend.

Melinda (Mindy) Barry is the owner of Pomona66, a small online based jewelry business. Mindy’s frustration from not being able to purchase bracelets in stores that fit her dainty wrists pushed her to start making her own, which she has been doing for about 20 years now. While discussing her journey to becoming an entrepreneur she stated, “My mom always loved beaded jewelry too, particularly Native American, so I started making pieces for me and my family. I would sometimes get stopped on the street and asked where I got what I was wearing, and eventually started making jewelry to sell.” As a California native, Mindy draws her inspiration from colors, textures, and shapes in the natural world. Her love for nature and minimalist style are apparent in her rustic, detailed designs. You can shop Pomona66 at The Yoga Studio/Julie Muelemans Gallery (1106 E. Bell St, Bloomington, IL) and Main Gallery 404 (404 N. Main St, Bloomington, IL).

Mamm and Glam

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

We will be attending the Pink Partners of the Community Cancer Center’s Mamm and Glam event on Thursday, May 11th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This free event is an area-wide initiative to educate women about breast health and to raise the mammography rate in our community. There will be pampering services ranging from hand massages and manicures, to make-overs and up-do’s, food provided by Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano, and of course shopping! You can shop our lovely apparel, as well as jewelry, handbags, accessories, and skin care from other vendors.

There will also be 2 speakers at the event. Dr. Woodhouse, from the Community Cancer Center, will be speaking at 6 pm on the topic of Making Decisions from a Position of Strength Not Fear. Lifestyle coach Mattie Scott will speak at 6:45 with a talk on positivity titled “Less stress, More glam!”. In addition, there will be door prizes drawn at 7:15 that have been donated from some of the vendors in attendance. While pampering, shopping, and prizes are nice, the highlight of the evening is having each of BloNo’s mammography facilities in attendance with the ability to schedule a mammogram for those ladies who haven’t had one in the last year.

We were able to speak with Lisa Lowry, a Breast Health Navigator at the Community Cancer Center. On the topic of reaching more women in the BloNo area, she stated, “We decided who better to join our movement than local beauty shops. We had a focus group with several salons to discuss how we could all work together to reach the women of our communities, especially minorities. There is a large amount of minority women that do not get mammograms whether it is due to a lack of insurance, access to transportation, or lack of knowledge. Mamm & Glam was actually the idea of one of our salon partners, Rosie Smith, who owns Rosie’s Hair Gallery. The whole focus group thought her idea was excellent and we ran with it.”

Included in the Pink Partners, aside from the Community Cancer Center, is Advocate Bromenn, the Gale Keeran Center for Women, and OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. Throughout the year, this group of healthcare providers participates in different events to help spread the word on the importance of women receiving their annual mammogram. They are dedicated to spreading knowledge and increasing the use of this preventive health measure. We hope that you join us this Thursday in our fight against breast cancer!

Spring Pop-Up Boutique

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

OhmFit will be at Julie Meuleman’s Gallery (JMG) for the Spring Pop-Up Boutique this Friday from 2 pm to 7 pm, as well as Saturday from 12 pm to 5 pm! We will be joined by other boutiques and small businesses from our community, so you can shop for all your Mother’s Day needs. There will also be live music performed by Leah Marlene and coupons for the first 25 people in the door!

Julie has always had a passion for creating something from nothing. She states, “The challenge of layering color, texture, and visual interest is ingrained in everything I do. Fashion, art, writing, food…it’s all the same to me”. This event is the perfect mixture of her greatest interests.

The journey to establishing JMG was a long and humbling one. She shares how she found the perfect location and partner to begin this adventure with: “Last summer I learned of a beautiful space in the old Coca-Cola Bottling Plant that was going to become available at the beginning of the year. I knew I couldn’t afford it on my own, so I reached out to my friend and yoga instructor, Sheri McCloskey. I knew she had aspirations of opening her own studio, so I sent her a text that said, “You need floor space, I need wall space. What if we opened a yoga studio in an art gallery…””

JMG, which houses the Yoga Studio, is not your typical gallery. The decor is eclectic and quirky with a tree in one corner and Julie’s art in the other. Her paintings line the walls, which are known for bold color, movement, and energy. Both Julie and Sheri are also committed to giving back to their community through their businesses. The Yoga Studio hosts regular charity events and 10% of all gallery sales go to charity as well. In Julie’s words, “I have always done things in a very unconventional way, and JMG is no different”.

She goes on to express, “In addition to art and yoga, I love the idea of collaborating with others to create a unique shopping experience. It only made sense to create a pop-up boutique made up of our community’s favorite shops under one roof. I am thrilled with the list of vendors that will be joining the pop-up this weekend! It will be the perfect shopping experience whether you’re seeking a Mother’s Day gift or just perusing new spring arrivals.” Experience the amazing ambiance for yourself while shopping all of the wonderful small businesses. We hope to see you there!

The Yoga Studio

Facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

Yoga is not limited to asanas (yoga poses). It is a way of life that can help us harmonize and balance our body, mind, and spirit. Whether you are looking to increase your strength and flexibility, lose weight, relax, or become an all around healthier being, yoga can help you reach your goal. The Yoga Studio in Bloomington will be providing the perfect opportunity for you to get your feet wet or to continue to evolve in your practice with their free yoga classes that will be held on January 28th and 29th.

Sheri McCloskey, the owner, has been teaching within the BloNo yoga community for several years. Her dream of creating a space solely dedicated to this practice where yogis can feel comfortable, safe, and free from judgement has finally come to fruition, and you don’t want to miss this opportunity to enjoy a free Yoga Studio experience.

When asked about her desire to start this establishment, Sheri stated, “There’s one simple reason I’m opening my studio: to get more people to do yoga. We live in a 24/7 connected world and rarely have enough time to pause and get in touch with ourselves. Some people think they can’t do yoga because they’re not flexible, athletic, or calm enough. Guess what? Yoga is literally for everyone. Leave your preconceived ideas at the door. Yoga can be loud, quiet, fun, serious, physical, or contemplative.” Sheri offers a variety of classes to meet your yogi needs, including “a boot camp class for those that want to get physical, a movement and meditation class for those that want to pause and reconnect with themselves, and a warm vinyasa flow that provides a fun and effective blend of the two.”

The regular schedule will begin on January 30th. You can visit the site to view the weekly schedule, pricing, and learn more about the teachers, as well as workshops and events held at the studio. You owe it to yourself to tend to your physical, mental, and spiritual needs, so take advantage of this opportunity and give yoga a try. Immerse yourself in the continuous process that is yoga, and keep in mind that the deeper you move into your practice, the greater its benefits are.
